Video walkthrough

This walkthrough uses the real DeanDesk interface with the fictional Northstar Academy demo school and a calm, AI-generated English voice. Payments and outside services are not connected in the demo.
Overview is the first tab in the course sidebar and the page every course opens on. It’s the course’s home page: students land here to see what the course is about, when it meets, and anything you’ve marked as important. You don’t edit the Overview directly. It’s built from the course settings and your pinned announcements, so you change it by updating those.

What’s on the Overview

From top to bottom, the Overview shows:

Teacher view and student view

As course staff, you also see:
  • the Instructor or Admin badge next to the course name in the course sidebar
  • the course action bar above the page, with Edit Course, Course Curriculum, Gradebook, and a call button such as Start Call (school admins also see Save as Template)
  • a warning when the course is still a draft: “This course is a draft and is hidden from students.”
  • a Start DeanDesk Call button when a class meeting uses DeanDesk’s built-in online classroom

Change what’s on the Overview

1

Open the course settings

Inside the course, click Edit Course in the action bar.
2

Update the details

Change the description, dates, weekly schedule, course image, or tags. Each one updates the matching part of the Overview.
3

Save

Click Update Course. Click View Course to go back and check the Overview.
To put a message at the top of the Overview, post it in Announcements and pin it.
Write the description for students. It’s the first thing they read, so say what the course covers and what they’ll need.
For the full list of course settings, including schedule overrides and live sessions, see Courses and Live classes.
