> This walkthrough uses the real DeanDesk interface with the fictional Northstar Academy demo school and a calm, AI-generated English voice. Payments and outside services are not connected in the demo. The **Gradebook** tab is the gradebook for the course you're in. Only course staff (the instructor, assistants, and admins) see it. It's the same gradebook admins open from **Academics → Gradebook**, but it opens straight to this course, so there's no course to pick. This page covers day-to-day grading as the course teacher. For grading settings, weighted categories, and grade items, see the full [Gradebook guide](/lms/gradebook.md).## Read the gradebookOpen a course you teach and choose **Gradebook** in the course sidebar. The **Grades** tab shows:- One row per student, sorted by last name.
- One column per assignment, with its total points under the title. In weighted grading, each column also shows its category.
- **Total**, the student's running result with a letter grade from your school's [grading standards](/lms/grading-standards.md). Items with no score yet are left out of the total until you score them.
- **Final Grade** and **Comments**, for the official course grade.
- A **Class Average** row at the bottom, and counts of students and assignments below the table.Use **Percentage** or **Points** to switch how scores are shown and typed. This only changes the display. How totals are calculated is set on the **Settings** tab.## Enter scores**1. Click a cell**Click the student's cell in an assignment column. A dash means no score yet; zero means zero.**2. Type the score**Type the score in points or percent, matching the display you chose, and press **Enter**. Press **Escape** to cancel the edit.**3. Save**Changes are pending until you click **Save** in the header, which shows the number of pending changes, for example **Save (3)**. Save before leaving the page.Late submissions are highlighted. Hover a scored cell to see the score in the other format and any feedback.> [!TIP]
>
> Scores you give while grading a submission on the [Assignments](/lms/assignments.md) tab appear here too.## Edit an assignmentOpen the menu on an assignment's column header and choose **Edit Assignment**. You can change the **Assignment Title**, **Total Points**, and **Weight (%)**, then click **Save Changes**.> [!WARNING]
>
> Changing **Total Points** scales every student's score for that assignment proportionally, so their percentages stay the same.## Record final grades**1. Choose a final grade**In the student's **Final Grade** dropdown, choose a letter. Choose **—** to clear it.**2. Add a comment (optional)**Type an optional course comment in **Comments**.**3. Save**Click **Save**. The final grade also appears in the **Grade** column of the [Students](/teaching/students.md) tab.## Other tools- **Add Category** creates a category column in points-based grading. In weighted grading, categories are managed on the **Settings** tab.
- **Full Screen** gives the gradebook the whole window. Click **Exit Full Screen** to return.
- The refresh button reloads the latest scores, and the download button exports the gradebook as a CSV file.## Related- [Gradebook](/lms/gradebook.md) — grading settings, weighted categories, and grade items.
