> This walkthrough uses the real DeanDesk interface with the fictional Northstar Academy demo school and a calm, AI-generated English voice. Payments and outside services are not connected in the demo. The **Attendance** tab is where you take roll for a course you teach and review how often each student attends. Only course staff (the instructor, assistants, and admins) see it.This page covers the in-course experience for teachers. For school-wide attendance modes, the daily register, automatic attendance from video calls, and reports, see the full [Attendance guide](/lms/attendance.md).## Read the summaryOpen a course you teach and choose **Attendance** in the course sidebar.* **End date** and **Range** set the window the summary covers: the chosen number of days (7, 14, 30, 60, or 90) leading up to the end date.
* The summary cards show the **Rate** plus counts of **Present**, **Tardy**, **Excused**, and **Unexcused**. When minutes late were recorded, the Tardy count also shows the total, for example **3 (25 min)**.
* **Student summary** lists each student's counts and attendance rate, with the lowest rates first so you can spot who needs a check-in.> [!TIP]
>
> To include today's class in the summary, set **End date** to today. The field may start on an earlier date. The attendance rate counts Tardy as attended: (Present + Tardy) ÷ total marked sessions.## Take attendance for today's class**1. Open Take attendance**Click **Take attendance**. The **Take course attendance** dialog lists every enrolled student, all starting as **Present**.**2. Mark each student**Click **Present**, **Tardy**, **Excused**, or **Unexcused** on each student's row. **Mark all present** and **Mark all absent** reset the whole list at once.**3. Add minutes late (optional)**When you choose **Tardy**, a **min late** field appears. Enter how many minutes late the student arrived, or leave it blank.**4. Save**Click **Save attendance**. The session is recorded for today and the summary refreshes. Clicking **Cancel** or closing the dialog records nothing.> [!NOTE]
>
> **Take attendance** always records a session for the current day. To change an earlier day, correct it in the history instead. If your school tracks attendance **per school day**, a banner explains that course attendance starts with today's school-day statuses and doesn't replace the official daily record. In that mode, teachers can take course attendance only if an admin has turned on **Allow teachers to manage daily attendance**. See [Choose the attendance mode](/lms/attendance.md#choose-the-attendance-mode).## Correct a past record**1. Open the history**Click **View history**. **Attendance History** lists every session, newest first, with one row per student.**2. Change the status**Click the correct status on the student's row. The change saves immediately and the summary updates.**3. Fix minutes late**For a **Tardy** record, edit the **min late** value, then press **Enter** or click away to save it.If the class met over a DeanDesk video call, the **Estimated time in call** column shows how long each student was connected and what share of the class that was. Your manual corrections take precedence over automatic call attendance.## Related- [Students](/teaching/students.md) — manage who's on the roster.
