This page defines the scale used by gradebooks, grade exports, final-grade choices, transcripts, and official reports.## Configure a scale**1. Start with a preset or your current scale**Click **Browse preset library** to inspect common U.S., Canadian, and UK scales. Choose a suitable starting point and review its bands before saving.**2. Set GPA and percentage bands**Set **GPA scale (highest possible GPA)**. For each row, enter a **Letter grade**, **Minimum percentage**, and **GPA points**. The **Applies to** column shows the resulting percentage range. Use **Add grade band** or remove a row to adjust the scale.**3. Add non-numeric grades**Add outcomes such as **P**, **I**, or **W** under **Non-numeric grades**. These can be assigned directly and never count toward GPA.**4. Save standards**Resolve any validation message, then click **Save standards**. Review a course gradebook and generate a sample report to confirm the scale matches your policy.![Northstar demo: Grading Standards](https://mintcdn.com/deandesk/Ib88bqpYdQ7_QHTP/images/dashboard/school/grading-standards.jpg?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=Ib88bqpYdQ7_QHTP\&q=85\&s=e85a9a32536f8196933bb00fd9bef2b4)Northstar demo — Grading Standards[Open full-size screenshot](/images/dashboard/school/grading-standards.jpg)## Understand the effect of a changeGrades already recorded keep their letters. GPA is recalculated with the current scale when reports are generated again. Changing the scale therefore affects future calculations and outputs; it does not relabel every historical final grade.Course-specific weights, assignment categories, and grading options live in [Gradebook → Settings](/lms/gradebook.md#configure-grading). Report presentation lives in [Reports → Templates](/reports/student-reports.md#report-templates).
